Complex geometry requires a higher transparency depth as the default settings.Here it is setup inside 3ds max 2023.But it appeared to be connected to the diffuse roughness.
For the 50 cal gun we need transparency for the holes in the first gun segment.I tried stochastic and clip mode as well and unfortunately there is still the problem.
On checking the slate material editor, the was an opacity map.I made a search and notice that this has been a known bug.Customize > preferances > viewports tab > configure driver.
3ds max opens the material/map browser.Alternatively, you can use the slate material.

Its not rendering either with any engine.Black (and grays) will be transparent, and white will be opaque.
